What Does the IR6 Green Card Category Mean?

The IR6 green card category is issued to the spouse of a U.S. citizen who has been married for more than two years at the time permanent residency is granted. Unlike conditional green cards (which are typically valid for two years under category CR1 or CR6), the IR6 is a 10-year permanent resident card without conditions.

You may fall under the IR6 category if:

  • You are legally married to a U.S. citizen.
  • Your marriage is more than two years old when the green card is approved.
  • You’ve completed the required immigration paperwork (I-130 petition, DS-260 or adjustment of status, etc.).

This category helps distinguish between conditional and non-conditional residency based on the length of marriage.

  • 10-year green card with fewer renewal requirements.
  • Path to U.S. citizenship after three years of permanent residency (if still married to the U.S. citizen).
  • Work authorization in any U.S. state.
  • Travel flexibility (with certain residency requirements).

  • CR6 (Conditional Resident): Spouse of a U.S. citizen, marriage under 2 years at approval.
  • IR6 (Immediate Relative): Spouse of a U.S. citizen, marriage over 2 years at approval.
The difference is mainly in whether the card is conditional or not.

With immigration rules evolving, in 2025 the IR6 process still requires standard forms and proof of marriage, but USCIS has expanded digital processing and online case tracking. This makes it easier to check status updates, upload documents, and reduce processing delays.

The IR6 green card category is essentially a permanent residency status for spouses of U.S. citizens whose marriage has already lasted over two years. It provides long-term stability, a clear path to citizenship, and fewer hurdles compared to conditional categories.

If you’re applying, make sure your paperwork is accurate, gather strong evidence of your marriage, and stay updated with USCIS announcements. Immigration categories may seem complicated, but understanding IR6 can make your journey much smoother.
